More than Profit: How Social and Impact Entrepreneurship is Changing the Rules Today

Today, the world is changing faster than ever. We find ourselves asking more often: “What legacy will I leave behind?” and “Can my business benefit not only me but also my community or country?”

If you are looking for answers to these questions, congratulations — you are on the path toward social or impact entrepreneurship. In this article, we will explore what these concepts are all about, how they differ from traditional business, and why they represent the future of the Ukrainian economy.

What are they, and what is the difference?
Many are used to dividing the world into “business” (making money) and “charity” (solving problems). But there is a vast, fascinating space between them.

1. Social Entrepreneurship This is a business where a social mission is the primary goal. You earn money by selling goods or services, but all (or most) of the profit is directed toward solving a specific problem: helping vulnerable groups, education, environment, etc.

2. Impact Entrepreneurship (Impact Business) This is a model where positive impact and profit go hand in hand. You create a scalable company that becomes successful specifically because it solves a global or local problem. The more you earn, the more good you do.

Why is it important right now?
For Ukraine, this is not just a trend but a matter of survival and reconstruction. The state and grants cannot always cover all needs. Impact business becomes the “engine” that creates jobs, helps people return to active life, and rebuilds communities on sustainable foundations.

Benefits for the Entrepreneur:

  • Customer Loyalty: People want to buy from those who share their values.
  • Team Engagement: Employees work with much more inspiration when they see the meaning behind their work.
  • Access to Resources: Global investors and donors are increasingly supporting impact projects.

How does this look in practice? Our cases
Every day, we see how ideas turn into real power. Here are a few directions we are proud of:

School Social Entrepreneurship We help children create their own businesses right at their school desks. For example, when students sew eco-bags or make craft souvenirs and use the earned money to build a sports ground in their community. This is more than just economics lessons — it is about raising a new generation of responsible citizens.

Project “ReStart: From Idea to Veteran Business” Together with the UNBROKEN center, we help our defenders and their families find themselves in civilian life through their own businesses. Entrepreneurship serves as a powerful tool for rehabilitation here. When a veteran opens their own coffee shop, workshop, or farm, they aren’t just earning an income — they are regaining a sense of control and significance.
